Windows xp on 20 mb ram

You load XP. You disable all the 'fun' stuff because it makes your 32m machine run slower than molasses. So what are you left with? I couldn't agree more, I am using Windows now instead of XP because performance is better. Also reliability is just as Microsoft advertised with their server line, up to In any event the only thing XP is good for is that it is "pretty".

I'd suggest over XP at least until it goes SP1 anyways. Much better. It's not expensive. Look at this logically Running it with 32RAM is not only not supported but it isn't recommended and even if it is possible it wouldn't be worth doing anyway. Just don't bother. XP is more than "pretty", it has its advances over blah, until most people can get past the look of the GUI, it'll be the same silly Oppinions. While Windows XP is better than 9x hands down, it has a difficult time competing with Windows on many machines.

The reasons for this seem to be hardware drivers that were poorly written or rushed out for hardware that people own. One prime example is my Symphony Wireless Network, which I just discovered is what has caused my many problems with XP. If you get a system that is all on the XP HCL then your eXPerience will be decent compared to Windows 9x regardless of your hardware assuming XP at least runs on your computer of course!

Thanks for your feedback. How much RAM you need for good performance is not a one-size-fits-all situation. You get good performance if the amount of RAM you have keeps you from using the page file significantly, and that depends on what apps you run. Most people running a typical range of business applications under XP find that somewhere around MB works well, others 1GB or so.

Almost anyone will see poor performance with less than MB. Some people, particularly those doing things like editing large photographic images, can see a performance boost by adding even more than MB--sometimes much more.

If you are currently using the page file significantly, more memory will decrease or eliminate that usage, and improve your performance. If you are not using the page file significantly, more memory will do nothing for you. That should give you a good idea of whether more memory can help, and if so, how much more.

It's very hard to even guess about something like that unless you give us much more information. Please answer all the following questions:. What is the hardware configuration of the machine?
